Does CBD Help Tinnitus? What the Science Really Shows

You’ve seen the ads and read the comments – “CBD cured my tinnitus!!!” As a tinnitus specialist, I want to slow this conversation down. If you live with tinnitus, I know how desperate the search for relief can feel. I see it every week here in Utah County, from American Fork to Spanish Fork.

What Is CBD, Really?

CBD stands for cannabidiol. It’s one of many compounds found in the cannabis plant. Unlike THC, CBD does not make you feel high. CBD products became widely available after hemp was legalized in the U.S. in 2018. That’s why you now see oils, gummies, creams, and drinks everywhere.

Here’s the problem: CBD is largely unregulated, which means:

  • Dosages are inconsistent
  • Purity varies by brand
  • Some products contain THC or contaminants not listed on the label

CBD can be found in three different types:

  • Full-spectrum: includes all hemp compounds (up to 0.3% THC)
  • Broad-spectrum: most THC removed
  • CBD isolate: CBD only

When it comes to tinnitus, more compounds doesn’t necessarily mean better.

Can CBD Reduce the Sound of Tinnitus?

This is the big question. And the answer matters.

The theory sounds promising. The brain’s endocannabinoid system plays a role in mood, pain, and some auditory pathways. So researchers wondered if CBD could calm tinnitus-related brain activity.

So far, the evidence says no.

  • There are no large human trials showing CBD reduces tinnitus loudness.
  • A 2022 research review concluded there’s insufficient evidence to support CBD as a tinnitus treatment.
  • Some animal studies suggest CBD combined with THC may worsen tinnitus-related behaviors.

Bottom line: CBD is not supported as a treatment that reduces the tinnitus sound itself.

For evidence-based guidance, organizations like the National Institutes of Health and the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery do not list CBD as a recommended tinnitus therapy.

Can CBD Help How You React to Tinnitus?

This is where the conversation gets more nuanced.

Tinnitus isn’t just about sound. It’s about how your brain reacts to the sound. Stress, anxiety, and poor sleep all make tinnitus feel louder and harder to tolerate. CBD may help with stress regulation, anxiety and sleep quality.

A 2019 case series found many patients reported less anxiety and better sleep after using CBD. If someone feels calmer and more rested, they often stop hyper-focusing on tinnitus.

That doesn’t mean the sound is gone. It means it feels less overwhelming.

This is likely why some people say CBD “helped their tinnitus.” It didn’t fix the sound. It changed their reaction to it.

The Bottom Line: What Actually Works

Let’s be very clear and very honest.

  • CBD is not a cure for tinnitus
  • There is no strong evidence it reduces tinnitus volume
  • It may help some people cope better by improving sleep or lowering anxiety
  • CBD can interact with medications—always talk with your physician first

If you want treatments backed by real science, focus here:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Sound therapy and sound enrichment
  • Hearing aids (when hearing loss is part of the picture)
  • Lenire Bimodal Neuromodulation

These are considered gold-standard tinnitus treatment approaches and are recommended by organizations like the AAO-HNS.
