Case Study: How Allen Got His Life Back: “Everything Just Came Alive Again”

When Allen walked into Timpanogos Hearing & Tinnitus, he wasn’t just struggling with hearing loss—he was struggling with connection.

“It was getting harder and harder to communicate with my wife and family,” Alan recalled. “Even when she was sitting right next to me, I just wasn’t hearing her. I’d have her repeat stuff that people were saying to me.”

Like so many people living with untreated hearing loss, Alan began to withdraw from conversations, especially in noisy environments. The frustration built slowly—but deeply.

“I was kind of getting reclusive… I wanted to isolate more because I just wasn’t part of the conversation with a lot of people,” he admitted. “Even my wife was starting to yell, and other people in the room would be like, ‘You don’t have to yell,’ and she’d say, ‘Well, yes, I do.’”

Alan had previously tried an inexpensive pair of hearing aids, which helped somewhat—but not enough.

“I’ve learned since then, you get what you pay for with hearing aids,” he said. “I had no idea what I was missing until I got here.”

Rediscovering the Sounds of Life

Alan came in expecting a quick adjustment—but what he received was a complete transformation.

“They did all the testing here that I didn’t even know existed,” Alan said. “They educated me about the difference between the cheaper ones and the better ones that can really adapt to my specific hearing loss.”

Alan had damage from shooting guns and exposure to loud noise in his youth. The new hearing aids were carefully tuned to strengthen everything he hadn’t permanently lost. And the impact was immediate.

“From the moment I put those hearing aids in, I felt like everything was alive. The room, the paint—it makes me emotional still because it was a big deal. I mean, I felt like everything was just alive and I was part of it.”

With his new devices, Alan could finally rejoin the world around him.

“I can go to dinner, I can go to people, I can be in a room where there’s background noise, and I’m part of the conversation. I can hear the dog walk across the room, the hum of the wheels, birds chirping—I didn’t hear any before, and now I can hear some. And I’m just grateful for that.”

A Long-Term Partner in His Hearing Journey

Alan also praised the ongoing care and follow-up that Timpanogos Hearing provides.

“Every three months I come in and they check things, clean, help me keep up. Then there’s a yearly checkup to adjust if we need to. I’m just grateful for it.”

His Advice to Others: “It Improved My Whole Life”

When asked what he’d say to others hesitant to start treatment, Alan didn’t hesitate:

“I’ve read a lot of the literature they’ve given me, and I do feel like it contributes to my longevity and mental awareness. The more sounds I get, it stimulates my brain, and I feel like I’m going to have a better quality of life. I don’t know how you put a price on that—I just don’t.”

Alan summed it up with a heartfelt endorsement:

“These hearing aids—they’re a daylight and dark difference from the ones I had before. I was grateful for those, but I’m even more grateful now. If there’s any way you can do it, it really improved my whole life. I hope it would do the same for you.”
