Real Ear Measurement in Utah: Hearing Aids Verified for Your Ears

Real ear measurement in Utah is part of every adult hearing aid fitting at Timpanogos Hearing & Tinnitus. Before you leave with new hearing aids, we measure the sound they deliver inside your own ear canal and fine-tune them until they match your prescription.

It isn’t a premium tier or an add-on you have to ask for. It is how every fitting is done at our American Fork, Spanish Fork and South Jordan clinics, because a hearing aid tuned to your ear is a hearing aid that can do its best work for you.

What Is Real Ear Measurement?

Real ear measurement (REM), also called probe microphone measurement, checks how much sound your hearing aids actually deliver near your eardrum while you wear them.

Every ear canal is shaped differently, and that shape changes how a hearing aid sounds. Hearing aid software starts with an estimate based on an average ear. Real ear measurement replaces that estimate with a measurement of yours, so your hearing aids are set to your prescription, pitch by pitch.

What Happens During a Verified Hearing Aid Fitting?

Real ear measurement happens during your fitting appointment and doesn’t hurt. Here is what to expect:

  1. A baseline measurement. A thin, soft tube is placed in your ear canal and we measure how your ear responds to sound on its own.
  2. Your hearing aids go in. With the tube still in place, we play speech and measure the sound your hearing aids produce inside your ear.
  3. We compare it to your prescription. The results appear on screen next to the target for your hearing test, so we can see where the sound is too soft, too loud or right on target.
  4. We fine-tune until it matches. We adjust your hearing aids and measure again until they deliver what your hearing loss calls for.

Then we make sure the sound is comfortable and natural for you. Follow-up visits fine-tune things further as your brain adjusts.

Why Does a Verified Fitting Matter?

Hearing aids can only help as much as they are set to help. A verified fitting means:

  • Clearer speech. The soft, high-pitched sounds that make words clear are set to the right level for your ears. That matters most when everyone sounds like they’re mumbling.
  • Better hearing in noise. Today’s hearing aids are very good in noise when they start from an accurate fitting. See how we help with trouble hearing in noise.
  • Fewer adjustment visits. Starting from a measurement instead of an estimate gets you closer to your best hearing sooner.
  • Confidence in your investment. You know your hearing aids are delivering what your hearing test calls for.

Real ear measurement is recommended by professional audiology guidelines, yet many clinics don’t do it routinely. Learn why most clinics skip it.

Who Benefits From Real Ear Measurement?

  • First-time hearing aid wearers, so your first experience starts with a fitting matched to your hearing.
  • People upgrading their hearing aids, so new technology is set up correctly from day one. See hearing aid options.
  • People who got hearing aids somewhere else and aren’t hearing well. If your hearing aids were never checked with real ear measurement, we can verify them in your ears.
  • People with tinnitus, because accurate amplification is part of effective tinnitus treatment.

Does Real Ear Measurement Cost Extra?

No. Real ear measurement is included in every hearing treatment plan, along with your hearing evaluation, follow-up care and hearing rehabilitation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Real Ear Measurement

Where can I get real ear measurement in Utah?

At Timpanogos Hearing & Tinnitus in American Fork, Spanish Fork and South Jordan. It is part of every adult hearing aid fitting at all three clinics.

Does real ear measurement cost extra?

No. It is included in every hearing treatment plan, along with your hearing evaluation, follow-up care and hearing rehabilitation.

Does real ear measurement hurt?

No. A thin, soft silicone tube rests in your ear canal next to the hearing aid. Most people say it feels like wearing an earbud.

How long does real ear measurement take?

It usually adds 15 to 30 minutes to your hearing aid fitting appointment. The measurement itself takes a few minutes per ear, and the rest is fine-tuning your hearing aids to match your prescription.

Is real ear measurement the same as a hearing test?

No. A hearing test measures your hearing. Real ear measurement measures the sound your hearing aids deliver in your ear, so they can be set to the prescription from your hearing test.

How do I know if my last fitting included real ear measurement?

You would remember a thin tube placed in your ear canal while your hearing aids played sound and a screen showed graphs compared to a target. If you’re not sure, ask your provider.

Can you do real ear measurement on hearing aids I got somewhere else?

Yes. If your hearing aids were never verified with real ear measurement and you aren’t hearing well, we can verify them in your ears at any of our three clinics.

Why don’t all clinics do real ear measurement?

It takes specialized equipment, training and extra time during the fitting. We believe a fitting isn’t complete without it.

Can real ear measurement help with tinnitus?

For people with tinnitus and hearing loss, accurate amplification is an important part of treatment, and real ear measurement confirms the hearing aids are set correctly.

Do you use real ear measurement for every type of hearing aid?

We verify every adult hearing aid fitting. Your audiologist will explain how verification works for the style you choose.
