Hearing Care From a Family That’s Been Here for Generations

Timpanogos Hearing & Tinnitus was founded in 2003 by Dr. Layne Garrett, Au.D., at 343 S 500 E in American Fork — the flagship of our three Utah locations. But our roots here go back much further. Dr. Garrett’s grandfather, Dr. Guy Richards, served as American Fork’s town doctor, and Dr. Garrett and his wife Kim are both American Fork High School graduates. When you visit our clinic, you’re seeing a hometown practice continuing a multi-generational family tradition of caring for this community.

That local history comes with something else: Utah’s most advanced hearing and tinnitus care, right in your city. Our practice has been named Utah’s Best of State in Auditory Services 15 times, and we’re the only provider in Utah offering Lenire, an FDA-cleared tinnitus treatment device.

A Hearing Test That Measures How You Actually Hear

Most of the American Fork patients we see aren’t struggling to hear everything — they’re struggling to hear clearly. Following one conversation is fine, but the moment two people talk at once in a meeting or at the dinner table, the thread disappears. The TV volume creeps up a little each year. You catch yourself asking people to repeat things in places that shouldn’t be that loud.

Many of these patients have what clinicians call hidden hearing loss — real, measurable auditory difficulty that a standard hearing screening misses completely, because standard screenings only measure your ability to detect tones in a quiet room.

That’s why every evaluation at our American Fork clinic includes speech-in-noise testing as a standard part of the workup, along with pure-tone audiometry, speech discrimination testing, tympanometry, and cognitive screening where appropriate. If you want to understand why a thorough evaluation looks so different from a free screening, our complete guide to hearing loss walks through it.

Tinnitus Treatment in American Fork

Ringing, buzzing, or humming in your ears — whether it started after decades of construction, landscaping, or manufacturing work, or crept in gradually from years of earbuds, commutes on I-15, and long days in a noisy open-plan office — is treatable. Even if it’s been there for years. Even if you’ve been told nothing more can be done.

Timpanogos Hearing & Tinnitus is Utah’s most advanced tinnitus treatment center, and the only provider in Utah offering Lenire — an FDA-cleared device that uses bimodal neuromodulation to change how the brain processes tinnitus signals. We’re one of roughly 14 Lenire Preferred Providers in the entire United States and one of the first 10 Modern Tinnitus Specialty Centers in the country.

Our treatment protocols go well beyond one device:

  • My Tinnitus Therapy — our in-house CBT-based coaching program that helps patients reduce distress and build long-term habituation
  • Comprehensive tinnitus evaluation, separate from the standard hearing test
  • Hearing aid therapy with integrated sound therapy when hearing loss is a contributing factor
  • Sound therapy and habituation approaches based on current clinical evidence
  • Sleep-specific tinnitus strategies for symptoms that peak at night

Our reported 90% tinnitus treatment success rate reflects more than 20 years of clinical practice. If you’re just starting to research your options, our comprehensive tinnitus guide is the right place to begin.

Hearing Health Is Brain Health

The 2024 Lancet Commission identified hearing loss as the single largest modifiable risk factor for dementia in midlife. When your auditory system is chronically under-supplied, your brain compensates — increasing listening fatigue, taxing working memory, and measurably accelerating cognitive aging.

You don’t have to be a senior to care about this. Listening fatigue after long video calls, losing conversational threads when several people are talking, mental exhaustion that doesn’t match the physical demands of your day — these are often early auditory signals, years before anyone would call it hearing loss.

All of the providers at Timpanogos Hearing & Tinnitus are Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP) and the cognitive dimension of hearing health is part of every relevant evaluation we conduct. Learn more about mild hearing loss and dementia risk.

Where is Timpanogos Hearing & Tinnitus located in American Fork?

Our flagship clinic has been at 343 S 500 E, American Fork, UT 84003 since 2003. This is not a satellite office — it’s where Dr. Garrett practices and where our full clinical team and complete range of services, including Lenire and REM-verified fittings, are based.

What are the American Fork office hours?

Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM, and Friday 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Closed Saturday and Sunday.

Which audiologists practice at the American Fork office?

Dr. Layne Garrett, Au.D. (founder), Dr. Levi Lundquist, Au.D., Seth Austin, BC-HIS, and Doug Garrett, HIS. All clinicians are licensed professionals with active continuing education.

My hearing test was normal but I still miss things at home and work. What’s going on?

A standard hearing test measures your ability to detect tones in silence — it says nothing about how you process speech in real-world noise. This gap is called hidden hearing loss, and our speech-in-noise assessment frequently reveals meaningful processing difficulty in patients who’ve been told their hearing is fine.

Can tinnitus that’s been present for years still be treated?

Yes, often effectively. Duration alone doesn’t determine outcome. Our protocols include Lenire (Utah’s only provider), My Tinnitus Therapy, and a full multimodal approach with a reported 90% treatment success rate over 20 years.

What hearing aid brands do you carry?

Oticon, Widex, Phonak, Starkey, ReSound, and Signia. Every fitting includes Real Ear Measurement verification to confirm the devices are programmed accurately for your hearing loss.

At what age should kids have their hearing evaluated?

Earlier is better if there’s any concern. Warning signs include frequently asking people to repeat themselves, difficulty following directions, turning up devices, or struggling in noisy settings. Call (801) 763-0724 and we’ll help determine whether an evaluation is warranted.
