A doctor explains hearing benefits to an older female patient.

Most people are surprised to learn that insurance doesn’t usually cover the medical treatment of hearing loss. Some do, but it’s rare. A few state employees and certain federal workers (like postal employees) may have a benefit. But a full-coverage plan is almost like winning the lottery.

That said, some plans will contribute toward treatment and devices, and that benefit can be combined with our affordable treatment program to lower your monthly payment. When you come in for your first appointment, we’ll check your insurance benefits for you.

Does Insurance Cover Hearing Loss Treatment?

In most cases, no. A recent study published on PubMed shows that private insurance mandates for hearing aids only cover a small portion of U.S. residents. Some state employees and federal employees may receive a set benefit, usually once every few years.

Even if your insurance helps, you’ll likely still have monthly out-of-pocket costs. The important thing is knowing that any benefit you do have can be applied toward our treatment plans.

What If My Coverage Isn’t Enough?

This is actually the most common situation. Many patients have a benefit, but it doesn’t cover the full cost of treatment. For example, if your insurance pays $2,000 toward hearing aids, we’ll apply that amount directly to your treatment plan.

Think of it like vision insurance where the insurance plan covers a certain amount toward an exam and basic frames / lenses. If you need more expensive lenses or frames than allowed, you pay the difference out of pocket.

The good news is that instead of losing the benefit or having to pay everything out of pocket, your insurance contribution lowers your overall cost. That means your prepaid total or fixed monthly payment will be reduced, making care more affordable while still giving you access to our full program.

Example: Insurance Benefit vs. Full Treatment Plan

ScenarioWhat Insurance PaysWhat’s CoveredWhat’s MissingYour Monthly Plan Cost
Insurance Only$2,000 (typical benefit)Lower end hearing devicesOngoing care, adjustments, annual testing, cleanings, long-term supportYou pay out-of-pocket for all follow-ups
Insurance + Timpanogos Treatment Plan$2,000 (applied to plan)Top-tier hearing devices plus full treatment program (adjustments, annual testing, cognitive screening, cleanings, long-term support)Nothing left outLower monthly payment, all care included

What About My Explanation of Benefits (EOB)?

Sometimes patients receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) that shows what the insurance company allows and says they only owe a certain amount. It’s important to know that this usually applies only to the hearing devices themselves.

Your treatment plan is more than just devices. It includes ongoing care, adjustments, testing, and support that insurance doesn’t cover. That means you’re still responsible for the full cost of the treatment plan, minus whatever your insurance contributes.

The good news is that we apply every bit of your coverage directly to your plan, so it lowers your monthly cost as much as possible.

Third-Party Hearing Benefits (TruHearing, Epic, Etc.)

Some insurance companies use third-party groups like TruHearing or Epic to offer hearing aid “discounts.” On the surface, this sounds helpful, but there are trade-offs.

Here’s how it works:

  • You call the third party, and they connect you with a contracted provider.
  • That provider is paid a small fee to fit specific hearing aids and provide short-term follow-up.
  • After the initial period (6–12 months), all visits are out of pocket—including cleanings, adjustments, and repairs.

Why We Don’t Use These Programs Anymore

We tried them in the past, but we found they didn’t serve patients well:

  • Limited testing. The plans only covered basic diagnostics. We couldn’t do the full hearing and cognitive evaluations we provide all other patients including tympanometry, OAE, Real Ear Measurement, Cognivue Cognitive Screening, Sound Field Testing, and more .
  • Limited devices. We had to fit only the devices the plan allowed, even if they weren’t the best option for the patient.
  • Limited follow-up. Once the free visits ended, many patients skipped ongoing care. Their devices weren’t adjusted for changes in hearing, which put them at higher risk for falls, memory decline, and reduced satisfaction.

Because we want our patients in Utah County—from American Fork to Spanish Fork—to receive the highest standard of care, we no longer participate in these programs.

FAQ

Do you take insurance?
Yes, we’re providers for most insurance plans. We’ll check your benefits for you at your first appointment.

Will insurance pay for all of my hearing treatment?
Almost never. Some plans may help with partial coverage, but most patients still have a monthly out-of-pocket cost.

What if my coverage is only partial, like $2,000 toward hearing aids?
We’ll apply it directly to your plan. That way, your monthly cost goes down while you still receive full treatment.

What if my Explanation of Benefits (EOB) says I only owe a small amount?
That amount usually only applies to the hearing devices. Your treatment plan also includes testing, adjustments, and ongoing care. Insurance almost never covers those, so your benefit is applied to lower your monthly payment, but it won’t cover everything.

What if my plan uses TruHearing or Epic?
We don’t participate in those programs anymore, because they limit care. We’ll show you better options through our treatment plans.

What if I don’t have any insurance coverage?
That’s common. We’ve created an affordable plan that most of our patients use successfully.
