Some of our patients think that buying a hearing aid is like buying a television or other large purchase– once it’s paid for, you don’t think about it again. However, we prefer to think of it as more like buying a car, where regular maintenance is recommended to keep it functioning to it’s best ability. Because of that, we recommend the following care schedule:
Daily: Open the battery door when removing the hearing aid to go to bed at night. Use a soft bristled toothbrush to brush away any debris– especially on the part that goes into your ear.
Weekly: (or as needed) Change the Battery.
Every 6 months: Schedule a professional clean-and-check. During this appointment, one of our audiology technicians will clean, disinfect and check the hearing device for any signs of wear or corrosion. (This can be done more often than every 6 months if needed.) We will also give you our special 6-Month Kit during this appointment which includes a new soft-bristled toothbrush, a battery caddy and a card with tips for care. Please note: These appointments are not scheduled with an audiologist. If you need to have adjustments made or have another reason to see the audiologist, make sure you call a week in advance to be put on the correct schedule.
Every Year: Hearing Exam and Reprogramming if necessary. Hearing, like vision, changes over time. Because hearing aids are programmed to fit your hearing loss and preferences, as the hearing changes, the aids need to be adjusted. This is a 30 minute appointment with the audiologist.
As Needed: Additional cleanings and adjustments according to your needs.
By following this schedule, you are more likely to get the full value from your hearing aid investment. Plus, we just love to see our patients in our office! If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment, give us a call at 801-770-0801.
