About Us: Hearing and Tinnitus Care in Utah Since 2003

Timpanogos Hearing & Tinnitus is a locally owned audiology and tinnitus practice founded by Dr. Layne Garrett in American Fork in 2003. Today our audiologists and hearing specialists care for patients at three clinics: American Fork, Spanish Fork and South Jordan.

We treat hearing loss, not just sell hearing aids, and tinnitus care is one of our specialties. That means a thorough evaluation, a plan built around your life, treatment verified in your own ears, and follow-up care for as long as you’re with us.

How Timpanogos Hearing & Tinnitus Started

Dr. Garrett opened the practice in his hometown of American Fork, where his grandfather, Dr. Guy Richards, served as the town doctor. His path to audiology began on a mission to the Deaf community in Boston, where he saw how much restored communication changes a person’s life.

He earned his Doctor of Audiology from Salus University and worked at Sonic Innovations, training audiologists across the country, before opening his own clinic. He still leads the practice as founder and clinical director and sets the standard of care every provider follows.

Why We Treat Hearing Loss as a Chronic Medical Condition

Hearing loss usually changes over time, and it affects how well you follow conversations, how tired you feel at the end of the day and how connected you stay to the people around you. So we manage it the way good doctors manage any long-term condition, with testing, a plan and regular check-ins. Every new patient gets:

Tinnitus Care Is a Specialty Here, Not a Side Service

Tinnitus is in our name for a reason. During his doctoral training, Dr. Garrett studied tinnitus under Dr. Pawel Jastreboff, who developed Tinnitus Retraining Therapy. Jastreboff told the class they weren’t yet qualified to treat tinnitus, and Dr. Garrett took that seriously. Tinnitus has been a focus of his training and his practice ever since.

Today our tinnitus care includes:

  • Tinnitus evaluations of 90 to 120 minutes, with diagnostic hearing tests, speech-in-noise testing, tinnitus pitch and loudness matching and validated questionnaires
  • Providers trained specifically in tinnitus: our audiologists hold the American Board of Audiology’s Tinnitus Management certificate (CH-TM), and our hearing instrument specialists completed the International Hearing Society’s tinnitus care program
  • Lenire, the FDA De Novo approved tinnitus treatment. We have done more Lenire fittings than any other clinic in Utah
  • My Tinnitus Therapy, Dr. Garrett’s 8-week CBT-based program, plus sound therapy and hearing aids when hearing loss is part of the picture

Giving Back to Our Community

Giving back is part of how we run the practice. We contribute 8% of our profits to local causes, including the Boy Scouts, the International Children’s Fund, local high school sports teams and band, and sub-for-Santa families at Christmas.

Through Hearing the Call Timpanogos, people in our community who can’t afford hearing care can apply for free hearing aids and care. Those who qualify give 10 hours of community service in return.

In fall 2025, Dr. Garrett and co-owner Kim Garrett traveled to Brasília, Brazil, with Hearing the Call’s international chapter and fit hearing aids for 169 people. Read about the Brazil trip. Dr. Garrett has also served on humanitarian trips to Ghana with America Helps.

Closer to home, Dr. Garrett serves on the council for Utah’s Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementia programs and mentors audiology interns from Utah State University, and our tuition benefit helps team members continue their education.
